TYPO3’s maker Kasper Skårhøj remembers it like this

After developing the open source software for a long time, with the preparations through for initial release, Kasper was looking for some new attractive name for the – to be released software. The intention was to give a name like “ Freestyle “ which meant open and flexible, but this name could have been a hurdle owing to the presence and association of certain available products and their related trademarks. So naming the new software was hanging around in Kasper’s mind unless there was a new better idea that could be generated.

On one of the Friday nights, after regular working hours, while he was knocking at the code because of some unintentional typing error on the command line of Linux, he accidentally deleted a whole week programming He remembers chill feeling that spread over his body knowing that something really terrible had happened. He rose slowly, walked to the other side of the room, sat on the sofa and looked back helplessly at the laptop that was innocent lying at his desk.

Starring blank for some time and not knowing further what to do next, he remained seated. Withstanding the initial shock for the loss of the code but slowly accepted the fact that it was not possible to recover the lost code. But this phase went surprisingly smoothly as Kasper was confident that whatever work that was done was surely known to him and still a fresh in his mind. Taking this incident in broader perspective and knowing & realizing the fact that most of the things were known to him, gave him a comfort and confidence to work ahead. Working back, the new program was created and this new program ran smoothly and eventually the new product was much improved one. Immediately an idea came forth for naming it as typo. This name seemed to fit in particularly well as going by the history of the product owing to typographical error, the important part of the code was deleted and typo has something to do with the typography layout and its contents.
Originally there were Typo versions 1, 2 and 2.5. The continued success of version 3 made sure the three earlier released standard versions behind the product was a perfect support to the proposed name. Now, even with the launch of newer versions of TYPO3 like version 4 and 5, but still the name stands at TYPO3 with versions like 4.1, 4.2 & 4.3. Hence it is still the TYPO3 and TYPO3 CMS – a new age CMS.
